On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and two days later, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as not just the birth of American independence, but also our right as citizens to light dangerous things on fire, cook as much meat as we can fit on our grill, and day drink to our heart's content, even on a weekday.
