Gran’s Fruit Cake
A British fruit cake for slicing at teatime
Ingredients
- 4 eggs
- 1/4 lb butter
- 1/4 lb margarine
- 1/3 lb sugar
- 1 tbsp block treacle
- 3/4 lb flour
- 1/2 lb fruit
- 1/2 tsp spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, mace)
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- almonds (a few)
Instructions
- Cream sugar and butters. Add eggs and beat until clear
- Mix in other ingredients
- Cook 420 on ? oven

Gran’s Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
- 3 eggs
- 1/4 lb each of vanilla chocolate (?)
- 1/4 lb butter
- 1/4 lb sugar
- 2 oz grounds almonds
- 3 oz flour
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- chocolate icing
Instructions
- Grate chocolate and heat it slowly over pan of hot water or in oven in a spoonful or two of water
- Beat butter till soft. Add sugar and beat to a cream.
- Sift flour and separate whites from yolks of eggs
- Stir in yolks of eggs to butter and sugar
- Then chocolate and ground almonds, also flour and mixing well
- Whisk the whites of eggs very thoroughly and stiffly and fold in
- The last thing before putting in oven, baking tin and bake 3/4 to 1 hour in moderate oven
